Competing to Complete Acts of Kindness

“A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees,” said famed aviator Amelia Earhart.

It was in that spirit, and a sense of competition, that Integrated Project Management (IPM) employees took on the Acts of Kindness Challenge.

Small Acts, Big Impact

The challenge encouraged creativity and generosity in asking participants to give back in small ways. Some of the activities were quick and easy. For example, holding the door for others, giving a bottle of water to a needy person on their commute, writing online reviews for local businesses, and donating items to charity.

Other acts of kindness took more effort and planning. For example, one person organized teammates to pick up trash in a local nature preserve. Another joined fellow veterans and their families on the 20-mile Chicago Veterans Ruck March to raise awareness for suicide prevention.

And volunteers donated time and talent to local organizations in a variety of ways, such as packing household goods for migrant families, coaching college students on job searches, and teaching religious education classes.

Winners All Around

Because it was a challenge, there had to be winners. Three employees among those who documented five or more acts of kindness were able to donate IPM funds to their favorite charity. The non-profits they selected—also winners—were El Valor, which supports people with disabilities through personal choice, employment, enrichment, and leadership programs; Communities 4 Communities, which provides necessities and personal guidance to refugees; and Visitation Church, a Catholic parish in Illinois.
